2003 RECAP:

Ichiro suffered his first major slump since arriving in Seattle three years ago and ended the year on a down note.  Slumps are definitely not something Ichiro is used to, as he hit over .300 once again.  He also set a ML career-high with 13 home runs, showing off some of the power he has when he decides to drive a ball.  He earned another Gold Glove as the best defensive right fielder in the game, and has been an All-Star every year he has been in MLB.

WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH HIM IN 2004:

Ichiro is the most intriguing hitter in the major leagues, just because he can swing the bat nine different ways and not miss.  He’s already running towards first during some of his swings, and still makes excellent contact.  He’s a major threat on the basepaths, has home run power when he feels like it, and has a gun for an arm in right.  He doesn’t make many highlight-reel catches, but some of his assists from right field are legendary.

IS HE HALL OF FAME MATERIAL?

Ichiro is putting up HOF seasons, but since he started at 28, he is a bit behind the career numbers curve.  He will raise an interesting issue for voters when he’s on the ballot when they consider how much Japanese numbers mean when summing up his entire baseball career.  Based on what he’s put up so far, and what he’s capable of, he should be a lock.
