2003 RECAP:

Amid great expectations, Jim Thome started out slow in Philadelphia after spending the first 12 years of his career in Cleveland.  However, he steadily improved throughout the year, mashing 47 homers, setting a career-high with 131 RBIs, and being the middle-of-the-lineup force that the Phillies expected when they signed him for a big salary.  He seemed to struggle to adjust to National League, as his strikeouts jumped by over 50 in number.

WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH HIM IN 2004:

Thome’s at-bats are among the most exciting in the game.  His powerful, long swing can produce some titanic homers and whiffs.  Philadelphia is counting on more of the former, as he is the centerpiece on a Phillies team that is favored to win the NL East.  They will count on Thome to be the rock of the lineup, and Thome is the kind of the guy that can be it.  He and Barry Bonds will duke it out for the NL home run crown.

IS HE HALL OF FAME MATERIAL?

Barring injuries, Thome will undoubtedly pass 500 homers, and is a good candidate to pass 600 for his career.  Should he get closer to the latter number, he’ll be a first-ballot HOFer.  Otherwise, he may be thrown in with a lot of similar all-or-nothing sluggers.  It all depends on how voters view sluggers like Thome.
