CAREER BRIEFLY:

Arky Vaughan could’ve been the best shortstop in basically every franchise, but unfortunately for him, he played for the same franchise as Honus Wagner.  Vaughan was an excellent hitter, and by the end of his tenure as shortstop for the Pirates, an excellent shortstop.  His strike zone judgment was his biggest asset, leading the league in walks, on-base percentage and runs three times each.  His .385 average in 1935 was the best ever average for a shortstop in the 20th century.  Defensively, he was terrible at the beginning, but by the end of his Pittsburgh days, he led the league in assists three times, and was among the leaders in range categories.  His trade to Brooklyn cost him some years – he sat out in protest of Leo Durocher because of disagreements on how the volatile manager led the team.  He worked on his farm, supporting the war effort, and returned to Brooklyn three years later as a role player.

LEGACY:

Unfortunately, with being under Honus Wagner’s shadow and only playing 14 seasons, Arky Vaughan is often overlooked when talking about great shortstops.  Had he not disagreed with Durocher, he could’ve approached the 3,000 hit milestone.

WHERE IS HE NOW?

Arky Vaughan died on August 30, 1952 in Eagleville, CA, drowning after his fishing boat capsized.
