2003 Recap:

David Wells didn’t pitch all that badly for a 40-year-old with the New York Yankees in 2003, posting a solid record and an ERA; in other words, doing what was expected of him.  Unfortunately for the Yankees, another thing that was expected of him – poor conditioning – came back to bite him in the end, as he closed out his Yankee career with a one-inning performance, as his bad back forced him out of the game.

Why YOU SHOULD WATCH HIM IN 2004:

David Wells will take the lead of the San Diego rotation.  The last time he was called upon to lead a squad, which was in 2001 with the Chicago White Sox, was a miserable disaster.  However, if the Padres get the good Wells, they get a guy who can eat up innings and work quickly.  Part of the reason for Wells’ success so late in his career is his efficiency: He led the league in the fewest walks per nine innings pitched, with less than one per game.

IS HE HALL OF FAME MATERIAL?

If he has a couple more seasons, it may warrant consideration, as 230 wins is impressive.  However, his high ERA and famous amount of run support will most likely keep him out.  For better or for worse, he will be remembered, though.
