2003 Recap:

Andy Pettitte started out terribly, especially by his standards last year, but won 16 of his last 18 decisions to finish with the second 20-win season of his career.  He also pitched the best of the Yankees rotation in the postseason, going 3-1 in the post-season with a 2.10 ERA.  He pitched well in Game 6 of the World Series, only allowing one run in seven innings.  However, he was out-dueled by an unstoppable Josh Beckett.

Why YOU SHOULD WATCH HIM IN 2004:

Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens bailed from the Yankees – Pettitte signed with the Astros and lured the Rocket out of retirement to join him in Houston.  He’ll finally be out from under Steinbrenner’s glare, but he’ll also be counted on to lead the Astros not only into the playoffs, but beyond.  He has as many postseason games under his belt (30) as the Astros franchise has total.  Pettitte pitched much better in Yankee Stadium than on the road throughout his career, so it will be interesting to see how he gets used to the confining Minute Maid Park.

IS HE HALL OF FAME MATERIAL?

Right now, most likely yes.  It all depends on how standards are lowered when Pettitte is considered for the Hall.  At 31, he has 149 wins, and probably won’t be able to sustain a pace to get himself to 300, which has been the benchmark for starting pitchers.  However, when Greg Maddux passes the milestone, he could be the last pitcher to ever win 300 games.  Pettitte could wind up with 250 with an excellent winning percentage, and with all the postseason experience he has, his career should be Cooperstown-worthy.
