2003 Recap:

“Everyday Eddie” Guardado had another great season for the Twins, setting a career low in ERA in his second full year in the closer role.  He set a Minnesota record by converting 24 consecutive saves during 2003, and had another streak of 17 while bringing up the rear of a bullpen that was the strength of the Twins team, as well as one of the best in all of baseball.

Why YOU SHOULD WATCH HIM IN 2004:

Guardado is taking his act to a bigger stage in Seattle.  He came to the Mariners expecting to be a setup man, but with Kazuhiro Sasaki’s unexpected departure to Japan, Guardado may have the closer role all to himself, if Shigetoshi Hasegawa doesn’t get it first.  He may not make hitters look as bad as Hasegawa, or any other closer for that matter, but he gets them out nonetheless.

IS HE HALL OF FAME MATERIAL?

Not really, especially since the voters don’t give serious consideration to closers.  But what he does have is one of the best nicknames in baseball.
